China Completes World’s Widest Underwater Road Tunnel in Just 110 Days

In yet another engineering marvel, China has successfully completed the construction of the world’s widest underwater road tunnel — and in a record-breaking time of just 110 days.

Located in Guangdong Province, the tunnel spans a staggering 46 meters in width, making it the widest subaquatic roadway ever built. It will accommodate 8 lanes of traffic, easing transportation across the Pearl River Delta, one of China’s most economically active regions.

The underwater tunnel is part of the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Link, a massive infrastructure project connecting the cities of Shenzhen and Zhongshan. The record-breaking section was constructed using advanced immersed tube technology and modular precast segments, placed with millimeter precision beneath the riverbed.

  • Widest underwater vehicular tunnel in the world (46 meters)
  • Built in just 110 days, setting a new global benchmark
  • Equipped with high-tech ventilation, emergency systems, and smart traffic controls

Engineers credited the lightning-fast completion to automated systems, AI-guided segment alignment, and round-the-clock construction, without compromising safety or structural integrity. The project also prioritized eco-protection measures, minimizing impact on aquatic ecosystems.

A spokesperson for China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) said:

“This isn’t just a tunnel — it’s a symbol of what’s possible when innovation, speed, and scale come together. We are proud to lead the world in underwater infrastructure development.”

The tunnel will reduce travel time across the delta from 2 hours to just 30 minutes, improving logistics, trade, and daily commutes for millions. It also reinforces China’s reputation as a global leader in megastructure engineering.

China’s record-setting underwater tunnel proves that ambitious infrastructure can be executed at unprecedented speed and scale, redefining what’s possible in modern engineering — all while setting the bar higher for global connectivity.
