In a spectacular fusion of motorsport heritage and cutting-edge engineering, Porsche has unveiled the Porsche 963 RSP, a unique, one-off road-legal prototype that serves as a profound tribute to the legendary Count Rossi and his iconic road-going Porsche 917. This groundbreaking reveal took place on the very streets near the Circuit de la Sarthe, just days before the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The 963 RSP, whose “RSP” initials pay homage to motorsport titan Roger Searle Penske (to whom the car will eventually be delivered), draws its inspiration from the audacious spirit of Count Gregorio Rossi di Montelera. Fifty years ago, the Martini & Rossi heir famously drove his Porsche 917 race car, minimally adapted for the road, from Zuffenhausen to Paris, blurring the lines between racetrack and public highway.
This new creation is no mere showpiece. It’s a true LMDh chassis, the same backbone as Porsche’s current hybrid prototype competing in the World Endurance Championship and IMSA. While road-homologating a full 963 race car was deemed unfeasible, Porsche’s “submarine” project, initiated quietly within Porsche Cars North America, meticulously adapted a new chassis for limited street use under special exemptions from French authorities.
Finished in an elegant Martini Silver, mirroring Count Rossi’s personal 917, the 963 RSP boasts subtle modifications for road compliance, including a raised ride height, softened suspension, integrated turn signals, and even a horn. Its interior features a sophisticated blend of tan leather and Alcantara, a nod to the luxurious touches Count Rossi incorporated into his 917, while retaining its fundamental race car essence.
Under the hood lies a powerful 4.6-liter twin-turbo V8 engine derived from the Porsche 918 Spyder, coupled with an 800V hybrid system. This powertrain has been recalibrated to run on pump fuel and deliver smoother hybrid deployment for urban usability.
The 963 RSP represents a bold statement from Porsche, celebrating its rich racing history and the audacious individuals who dared to bring race-winning technology to the open road. Its debut alongside the original Count Rossi 917 near Le Mans underscores a half-century legacy of pushing automotive boundaries. Following its showcase at Le Mans, this extraordinary vehicle is set to make further appearances, including the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
