A Berkshire woman is taking part in one of the most grueling rugby challenges ever attempted — a 36-hour nonstop rugby match — in a bold bid to break a world record and raise funds for three rugby-related charities.
Sarah Coleman, from Thatcham, is representing Newbury Rugby Club along with two other teammates as they travel to Mullingar RFC in Ireland for the marathon event.
The match kicked off on Wednesday and is scheduled to continue until 20:00 BST on Thursday, testing the limits of both endurance and team spirit. Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire, Coleman described the team as “absolutely amazing” and said the group had connected instantly.
“It’s been incredible meeting the rest of the team — everyone’s so passionate, driven, and supportive,” Coleman said. “The energy is fantastic, and we’re determined to see this through.”
The effort supports three charities linked to the rugby community, focusing on injury recovery, youth development, and mental health.
Participants are expected to rotate positions, stay hydrated, and receive medical support throughout the match, which is being closely monitored by officials to ensure compliance with Guinness World Record requirements.
As the final whistle approaches, Coleman and her teammates are calling for public support and donations to help their cause — proving once again that rugby is more than a game, it’s a family.
