In a remarkable celebration of literature, unity, and cultural heritage, Seoul Metropolitan Library and Seoul Outdoor Library have set a new Guinness World Record for the most people in a reading relay, with an impressive 3,532 participants. The event took place on 27 September 2025 in Seoul, Republic of Korea, marking a meaningful tribute to the 80th anniversary of Korea’s Liberation.
Held at the iconic Gwanghwamun, known as the ‘Heart of Seoul’—a historic and civic landmark—the event brought together people of all ages and backgrounds to share in the joy of reading. The chosen literary work, Sky, Wind, Stars, and Poetry, written by cherished Korean poet Yun Dong-ju, served as the emotional center piece, highlighting Korea’s literary legacy and historical significance.
The relay began at 8:22 AM and concluded at 6:27 PM, with each participant taking turns reading passages aloud. Originally, the organizers set a symbolic goal of 3,180 participants, representing the March 1st Independence Movement (1919), the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, and the 80th death anniversary of Yun Dong-ju. However, the overwhelming enthusiasm from both pre-registered individuals and on-site participants pushed the final count to 3,532, surpassing the target by 352 participants.
What made the event even more special was the spirit of voluntary participation. Every reader and guest speaker joined out of passion, contributing to an atmosphere of unity, learning, and national pride. The event not only celebrated local literature but also inspired a renewed love for books and reading, especially fitting for the upcoming “season of reading.”
With this record-breaking achievement, Seoul has beautifully demonstrated how literature can unite people across regions, generations, and cultures—proving that the power of words truly knows no bounds.
