Mission Hills China Sets World Record for Largest Human QR Code

The world’s largest golf and spa resort, Mission Hills China, teed off its 20th-anniversary celebrations by setting a sensational world record for the Largest Human QR Code.

On January 28, 2013, over 2,000 dedicated employees of the luxury resort came together on the Mission Hills driving range in Shenzhen to form the gigantic, scannable QR code, successfully blending human assembly with digital technology.

To create the massive, perfectly aligned digital pattern, staff members stood in designated spots and opened red and white umbrellas, ensuring the correct colour variation and code matrix could be read from above.

An aerial photo, taken from a height of 270 feet (82 meters), captured the incredible formation. When scanned by a smartphone, the QR code instantly directed users to a campaign website promoting sustainable eco-tourism and celebrating the resort’s commitment to ecological balance.

Dr. Ken Chu, Chairman and CEO of Mission Hills Group, highlighted the initiative’s dual purpose: “We are committed to building a sustainable and environmentally responsible leisure and tourism business… We have a good story to tell and want to do so in a way that is both entertaining and engaging for the world to see.”

Mission Hills, which holds a separate Guinness World Record for the Largest Golf Facility (featuring twelve 18-hole courses), used the public stunt to spotlight its significant environmental investment, including a $50 million program focusing on water management, energy conservation, and air quality monitoring.

The promotion, which was verified by record-keeping officials, was also tied to a giveaway, offering participants who scanned the code and answered eco-tourism questions a chance to win a luxury resort package.

The event successfully demonstrated the power of mass participation and digital integration, solidifying Mission Hills China’s dedication to both scale and sustainability.
