Chhath Puja Earns UNESCO Nomination as India’s Oldest Nature-Worship Festival

India’s ancient and deeply ecological festival, Chhath Puja, has been officially nominated for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, marking a proud moment for Bharat and its traditions of nature worship.

The nomination, spearheaded by the Union Ministry of Culture, is a significant step towards securing global recognition for one of the oldest festivals dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya.

A Global Acknowledgment for Nature’s Devotion
Chhath Puja, predominantly celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and by the Indian diaspora across the globe, is unique in its unwavering devotion to the visible source of life—the Sun—and natural elements like rivers and ponds.

“A proud moment for Bharat — the world finally acknowledges our ancient devotion to the Sun and nature,” commented a cultural expert. “Chhath is a profound expression of ecological harmony, where every ritual—from standing in water to offering Arghya at sunrise and sunset—emphasizes sustainability, cleanliness, and gratitude.”

Ecological Ethos: The festival stands out for its emphasis on cleanliness of the environment, particularly water bodies, and the use of biodegradable materials like bamboo baskets and seasonal, local produce for offerings.

Egalitarian Spirit: The rituals are performed by devotees, known as parvaitin, often women, directly by the water bodies, without the mediation of priests, fostering a strong sense of community and inclusivity.

Multinational Push: India has been engaging with diplomatic representatives from countries like the UAE, Suriname, and the Netherlands, where the Indian diaspora celebrates Chhath Puja, to support a multinational nomination. This strengthens the case for its global cultural significance.

The inclusion of Chhath Puja on the UNESCO list would not only honor this age-old tradition but also ensure its systematic documentation, transmission, and preservation for future generations, while strengthening the cultural pride of the Indian diaspora worldwide.
