Renowned author, philanthropist, and former Chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, Sudha Murty, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first woman to be presented with the prestigious Global Indian Award by the Canada India Foundation (CIF).
The honour was bestowed upon Mrs. Murty at a grand Indo-Canadian gala event in Toronto. The award, which carries a monetary value of $50,000 (US), is presented annually to a distinguished Indian personality who has made an indelible mark in their chosen field on the global stage.
The CIF recognized Mrs. Murty for her extraordinary contributions to literature, her pioneering role as the first female engineer hired at TELCO (now Tata Motors), and her lifelong dedication to philanthropy and social welfare through the Infosys Foundation and the Murty Trust.
“It is my honor to receive this award from your country,” Mrs. Murty said in her acceptance speech. In a touching and generous gesture, she announced that she would be donating the $50,000 prize money to The Fields Institute at the University of Toronto, a research center dedicated to advancing mathematics and related disciplines.
The award also created a unique record for her family. Mrs. Murty’s husband, Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murthy, was the recipient of the same award in 2014, making them the first couple to both receive the esteemed recognition.
The Global Indian Award solidifies Sudha Murty’s position as a global icon whose work has fostered cross-cultural connections and inspired countless individuals through her storytelling and commitment to social change.
