Kutiyattam Becomes First Dance Theatre Form Recognized by UNESCO

Kutiyattam, the ancient Sanskrit theatre tradition of Kerala, holds the distinction of being the first dance-theatre art form to be recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This historic recognition marked a departure from UNESCO’s usual focus on monuments and heritage sites and spotlighted a living, breathing art form with over 2,000 years of legacy.

Blending classical Sanskrit drama with local artistic expressions, Kutiyattam is the oldest surviving theatre tradition in the world. Traditionally performed in temple theatres known as Koothambalams, it features elaborate gestures, facial expressions, and stylized movements, with performances that can extend for days.

The Mizhavu, a large copper percussion instrument played with bare hands, provides the rhythmic foundation for the performances. It is central to the dramatic intensity and spiritual depth that defines Kutiyattam.

This recognition not only highlights the global importance of India’s intangible cultural heritage but also ensures the preservation and revival of an art form once on the verge of extinction.
