Carnatic Music Maestro Dr. K. Omanakutty Amma Conferred Padma Shri 2025

Celebrated Carnatic vocalist, musicologist, and educator Dr. K. Omanakutty Amma has been honoured with the Padma Shri 2025, one of India’s highest civilian awards, for her lifelong contributions to Indian classical music and music education.

Dr. Omanakutty, an iconic figure in Kerala’s cultural landscape, is renowned for her work in reviving and popularizing the compositions of Swathi Thirunal, the 19th-century Maharaja-composer. Her research, performances, and teaching have played a pivotal role in preserving this unique heritage.

She served as a professor and head of the Department of Music at the University of Kerala, mentoring generations of musicians and scholars. Under her guidance, some of India’s finest voices—like K. S. Chithra, B. Arundhati, and Manjari—emerged and went on to achieve national and international acclaim.

An authority on Kathakali music and an advocate of music therapy, Dr. Omanakutty has authored several academic works and continues to inspire innovations in the field of classical music education. She also founded Sangeeta Bharati, an organization dedicated to nurturing young talent and promoting classical music in Kerala.

At 81, Dr. Omanakutty received the Padma Shri from President Droupadi Murmu in recognition of her outstanding service to Indian arts. The award is seen as a tribute to her unwavering commitment to the cultural fabric of India.

“I dedicate this honour to my teachers, my students, and the music that has given meaning to my life,” she said in her acceptance speech.

  • Preserving Culture: Revived rare compositions and traditional art forms.
  • Empowering Women: A pioneering female figure in a traditionally male-dominated field.
  • Inspiring the Next Generation: Her students continue to carry forward her legacy in India and abroad.

Dr. K. Omanakutty Amma’s Padma Shri is not just an individual honour—it is a celebration of tradition, scholarship, and the timeless power of music in shaping India’s soul.
