In a momentous and historic one-day international (ODI) clash, the India Women’s cricket team delivered a stunning blow to the formidable Australia Women, handing them their heaviest defeat ever in the history of women’s ODIs. The Indian team triumphed by a massive 102-run margin to level the three-match series.
The victory, achieved on Wednesday in New Chandigarh, is a significant landmark, as India becomes the first team to beat the all-conquering Australian side by a margin of more than 100 runs. This performance surpasses Australia’s previous worst defeat of 92 runs, which occurred over five decades ago against England in 1973.
India’s monumental victory was powered by a breathtaking century from opener Smriti Mandhana, who hammered 117 off just 91 balls. Her masterful innings, featuring 14 boundaries and four sixes, laid the foundation for India’s imposing total of 292 runs in 49.5 overs. Crucial support came from an all-round performance by Deepti Sharma, who contributed a valuable 40 runs.
Chasing a challenging target of 293, the Australian innings faltered early and never recovered. The Indian bowlers maintained relentless pressure, with young pacer Kranti Gaud leading the charge by taking 3/28. Deepti Sharma capped off her stellar day with the ball, claiming 2/24. Australia was eventually bundled out for 190 in 40.5 overs.
This spectacular win not only ties the ODI series at 1-1 but also marks India’s first ODI victory against Australia on home soil in over 18 years, underscoring the team’s rising stature in world cricket.
