Folk Icon Shri Bheru Singh Chouhan Honoured with Padma Shri for Preserving Malwa’s Kabir Legacy

Revered folk singer Shri Bheru Singh Chouhan, known for his heartfelt renditions of Kabir bhajans in the Malvi dialect, has been honoured with the Padma Shri in the field of Art for 2025. The award recognizes his lifelong contribution to Nirgun Bhakti Sangeet, a devotional music tradition centered around the teachings of the 15th-century saint-poet Kabir.

Born in Bajrangpura village, near Indore, Shri Chouhan’s journey is as inspiring as it is humble. The son of a labourer and himself once a daily wage earner, Chouhan was drawn to devotional singing under the guidance of his father, Madhu Singh Chouhan. Despite economic hardships, he remained devoted to Kabir’s spiritual messages of equality, simplicity, and unity.

For over five decades, he has traveled from village to village—often on foot or bicycle—to perform Kabir bhajans. His music resonates deeply across communities, transcending religious and social boundaries. Even in personal moments of grief, such as performing shortly after his father’s funeral, Chouhan has placed his art and devotion above all.

Reacting emotionally to the announcement of his award, Chouhan said:

“I am just a small man from a small village. Kabir’s grace brought me here. This honour belongs to the people who believed in my songs.”

His contributions have not only preserved an ancient musical form but have also inspired new generations to discover the depth of Indian spiritual and folk traditions.

With the Padma Shri 2025, the Government of India celebrates Shri Bheru Singh Chouhan’s dedication to cultural preservation and his powerful role in carrying forward the voice of Kabir in modern times.
