World’s Largest Goose Sculpture

In the heart of rural Sumner proudly dubbed the Wild Goose Capital of the World stands a quirky and colossal landmark that has become a must-see roadside attraction: Maxie, the World’s Largest Goose Sculpture.

Built in 1976 by Kansas City artist David C. Jackson, this giant fiberglass and steel Canada goose soars into the record books with its astonishing dimensions. Maxie stands approximately 40 feet tall and boasts a wingspan of around 62 feet (19 m), making it the largest goose sculpture of its kind in the world.

Constructed to celebrate the region’s abundant migratory geese and the community’s deep connection to waterfowl, the sculpture’s installation was a community-backed effort that even drew support from Missouri’s then-governor at its dedication.

Perched atop a pedestal in a local park, Maxie captures the imagination of visitors with its striking wings and lifelike posture and during gusty days, the sculpture is said to sway slightly in the breeze, giving the illusion that the massive bird might take off at any moment.

Over the years, travelers have made pilgrimages to see this feathered giant, making it a beloved stop for families, photographers, and enthusiasts of roadside Americana alike. Whether you’re passing through for the annual Goose Festival or exploring Missouri’s hidden gems, Maxie offers a whimsical photo opportunity and a feather-ruffling tale of art, community, and avian pride.
