An extraordinary and rare gemstone has captured global attention after being unveiled in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The owners of the gemstone have announced plans to sell the rare treasure, with an international auction expected in the near future. The estimated value of the Purple Star sapphire is set at approximately $300 million, equivalent to around ₹2,728 crore, making it one of the most expensive gemstones ever placed on the market.
Gem experts have also referred to the stone as the “Star of Pure Land,” highlighting both its rarity and spiritual symbolism. According to renowned gemologist Ashan Amarasingle, the Purple Star is officially the largest sapphire ever recorded in history. He described it as a once-in-a-lifetime discovery that stands unmatched in size, color, and natural formation.
What makes the Purple Star truly unique is its star sapphire effect, known as asterism. When light falls on the gemstone, it emits seven distinct rays, resembling a celestial constellation. This natural phenomenon gives the stone a star-like appearance, setting it apart from all other precious gems in the world.
Experts believe the unveiling of this sapphire further strengthens Sri Lanka’s reputation as one of the world’s most important sources of rare and high-quality gemstones.
