Sarawak has officially secured a Guinness World Record for the longest cumulative distance travelled by a GPS‑tracked drone relay, marking a major technological achievement for the Malaysian state. During the Countdown 2026 New Year’s Eve celebration at the Kuching Waterfront, officials proudly announced that a series of GPS‑tracked drones travelled a total of 1,706.7 kilometres over six days — flying an unbroken aerial route from Tanjung Datu in the southwest to Lawas in the northeast of Sarawak.
The record falls under the category “Longest Cumulative Distance by a Remote‑Controlled Multirotor/Drone Relay”, and was formally verified on stage by Guinness World Records adjudicator Jacob Yip Chong Wai, who presented the certificate to Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts. Organisers used successive GPS‑tracked drones to maintain a continuous relay route, with the operation spanning 128 flight segments and highlighting precision, endurance and coordination across the diverse terrain of Sarawak.
The record‑breaking milestone was celebrated alongside spectacular entertainment, including performances by local and international artists, and a world premiere of a drone film titled “Gateway to Borneo” — showcasing Sarawak’s natural landscapes and cultural richness from a bird’s‑eye perspective.Officials say this global recognition not only underscores Sarawak’s technological capabilities but also serves as a boost to the state’s tourism strategy during Visit Malaysia Year 2026, strengthening its profile as a forward‑looking destination on the world stage.
