India’s Deepest Metro Station

In a major milestone for urban transportation, the Howrah Metro Station on the Kolkata Metro’s East–West Green Line has become the deepest metro station in India, marking a new benchmark in the country’s metro infrastructure development.

The station, built beneath the historic Howrah Junction railway complex, reaches approximately 34 meters (about 105–112 feet) below ground level, surpassing other deep stations such as Delhi’s Hauz Khas Metro Station, which sits around 29 meters underground.

This engineering achievement is part of the ambitious East–West Metro corridor — India’s first underwater metro route that travels beneath the Hooghly River, connecting Howrah Maidan and Esplanade stations.

Designed with multiple levels and modern amenities, Howrah Metro Station not only enhances connectivity for commuters traversing one of India’s busiest railway hubs but also showcases the nation’s growing expertise in complex underground construction.

As metro networks across India continue to expand, including future deep stations planned in Chennai and Pune, Howrah stands as a landmark achievement in the nation’s journey toward world‑class urban mobility.
