Cluj‑Napoca Lets Commuters Earn Free Bus Rides by Doing 20 Squats

The Romanian city of Cluj‑Napoca has introduced an innovative “Health Ticket” initiative that encourages residents to stay active while promoting the use of public transport. Under the programme, commuters can receive a free bus ticket by completing 20 squats in front of a smart kiosk installed at a local bus stop.

As part of the city’s efforts to reduce reliance on private cars and foster healthier lifestyles, the smart booth — located at Memorandumului Sud station — uses built‑in cameras to count the squats performed by participants. Those who successfully finish the 20‑squat challenge within the allotted time are rewarded with a “Health Ticket,” valid for a single ride on the urban public transport network.

Originally launched during a European Week of Sport health campaign, the Health Ticket concept proved popular, leading local authorities and organisers from Sports Festival, with support from Cluj‑Napoca City Hall, to extend the initiative beyond its initial trial run. The project aims to integrate physical activity into daily routines, improve community fitness, and encourage environmentally friendly commuting habits.

By linking exercise with transit access, Cluj‑Napoca’s creative approach highlights how urban mobility programmes can also promote public health and sustainability — inspiring residents to move more while getting where they need to go.
