Gleneagles Hospital Chennai Sets New Benchmark in Gynaecology with Potential World Record Fibroid Removal

Gleneagles Hospital Chennai has drawn national attention in the medical community by showcasing a remarkable surgical achievement that could soon become a Guinness World Record in gynaecology. During a high‑level Continuing Medical Education (CME) event titled “Robotics in Gynaecology: The New Standard” held at Hotel Renest, Tirupati, the hospital highlighted its robotic removal of an approximately 5‑kilogram fibroid, one of the largest ever successfully treated using minimally invasive techniques.

Organised in collaboration with the Tirupati Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (TOGS) and the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at SVMC, Tirupati, the CME brought together more than 40 leading specialists who discussed the future of complex surgical care and the expanding role of robotic technology in women’s health. The highlight of the scientific session was a landmark case presented by Dr. Padmapriya Vivek, Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Gleneagles Hospital Chennai. She detailed how robotic assistance enabled surgeons to remove a massive 4.95 kg uterine fibroid through tiny incisions, a feat now being recommended for Guinness World Record consideration.

The procedure underscores the power of robotic precision in handling highly vascular and complex cases that would otherwise require extensive open surgery, offering patients benefits such as minimal blood loss, faster recovery and enhanced surgical accuracy near critical pelvic structures.

“Robotic surgery is no longer the future — it is the current standard for women’s healthcare,” Dr. Vivek said, emphasising the importance of sharing advanced techniques with the wider medical community to improve outcomes across the region.

The success of this demonstration reinforces the hospital’s commitment to continuous medical excellence, adoption of cutting‑edge surgical technologies, and leadership in minimally invasive gynaecological care. 5 kg fibroid removal is officially recognised by Guinness World Records, mark a historic milestone in robotic surgery and women’s reproductive health — shining a spotlight on India’s advancing capabilities in complex surgical innovation.
