Ethereal ‘Paper’ Church Near Chengdu Glows Amid Lavender Fields

A strikingly delicate structure outside Chengdu is redefining architectural imagination with its luminous, almost otherworldly presence. The Sino-French Science Park Church, nestled beside vibrant lavender fields, was designed in 2019 by Shanghai Dachuan Architects to evoke the appearance of a giant paper chapel, marrying aesthetic subtlety with structural ingenuity.

Unlike traditional churches built with concrete, stone, or steel, this chapel is constructed from thousands of white aluminum square tubes, meticulously arranged without welding or heavy materials. The result is a 65-square-meter sanctuary that appears weightless, as if floating above the landscape. Its design prioritizes transparency and lightness, allowing sunlight to pass through effortlessly and giving the building an almost ethereal glow. During the day, sunlight dances across the geometric frame, while at night, it transforms into a softly illuminated lantern-like silhouette that glows against the twilight.

Architects describe the church as a fusion of French Impressionist sensibilities and Chinese minimalism, creating a space that feels both meditative and playful. The structure emphasizes the experience of light and shadow over conventional mass and solidity, inviting visitors to engage with it in an intimate, contemplative way.

“The idea was to create a building that glows rather than dominates, that harmonizes with the surrounding fields rather than overshadowing them,” said a representative from Shanghai Dachuan Architects. Indeed, the church’s weightless design and open framework allow it to coexist with the natural landscape, providing a serene retreat for reflection and quiet appreciation.

Since its completion, the Sino-French Science Park Church has attracted architects, photographers, and tourists alike, drawn to its unique interplay of transparency, light, and space. The chapel stands as a symbol of modern design innovation, a bridge between cultural aesthetics, and a poetic example of architecture that prioritizes emotion, atmosphere, and harmony with nature.

This luminous “paper” church continues to capture imaginations, offering visitors a rare experience where architecture itself becomes a gentle conduit of light and serenity.
