Bhutanese spinner Sonam Yeshey has etched his name into cricket history by becoming the first bowler ever to take an eight-wicket haul in a men’s T20 match, setting a new world record in the process.
The 22-year-old left-arm spinner achieved the remarkable feat on 26 December 2025 during the third T20 International against Myanmar at Gelephu Mindfulness City. Yeshey produced a breathtaking spell of 8 wickets for just 7 runs in four overs, dismantling Myanmar’s batting lineup and bowling them out for a mere 45 runs in response to Bhutan’s 127 for 9.
Yeshey’s performance not only helped secure an emphatic 82-run victory for Bhutan but also rewrote the record books for the shortest format of the game. Priore to this historic effort, the best bowling figures in men’s T20 internationals were held by Syazrul Idrus of Malaysia (7 for 8) and Ali Dawood of Bahrain (7 for 19), both seven-wicket hauls.
Bhutan Cricket celebrated the achievement on social media, hailing Yeshey’s performance as a “spell for the ages” and confirming its recognition as a world record bowling spell. Yeshey, who made his T20I debut in 2022, has been a key figure in Bhutan’s bowling lineup and has taken multiple wickets throughout the series. His record-setting day will be remembered as one of the most extraordinary bowling displays in T20 cricket history.
