World’s Highest Cricket Ground

Chail Cricket Ground in Himachal Pradesh, India holds the title of the world’s highest cricket ground, perched at an elevation of 2,444 metres (8,018 feet) above sea level in the Himalayan foothills.

Located in the picturesque hill town of Chail, this extraordinary cricket field was established in 1893 by Maharaja Rajinder Singh of Patiala as part of his summer retreat. The ground was carved out atop a forested hill and later developed further by the royal family, creating a sporting venue unlike any other on the planet.

Unlike typical stadiums, Chail Cricket Ground is surrounded by lush forests and serves not only as a cricket venue but also as a playground for the Chail Military School. During school vacations, the field doubles up as a polo ground and space for other sports, reflecting its versatile charm. The altitude makes playing here a unique experience, with thin mountain air and dramatic landscapes enhancing both the challenge and the beauty of the game. Though it doesn’t regularly host professional international matches, this historic ground remains a beloved destination for cricket enthusiasts and tourists alike — a symbol of sporting spirit high above the ordinary.
