12-Year-Old Kerala Boy Swims 11 km Across Vembanad Lake With Hands Tied, Eyes World Record

In a remarkable feat of endurance and courage, 12-year-old Kashinath Rajeev has stunned his community by swimming 11 kilometres across Vembanad Lake with both hands tied behind his back, completing the challenge in 2 hours and 21 minutes on Sunday, December 28, 2025. Local reports say the young swimmer is now preparing to submit documentation to record-keeping organizations in pursuit of a world record recognition. The ambitious swim began at 7:25 AM from the Kumbalakari jetty in Cherthala, Alappuzha, amid cheers from supporters and was officially flagged off by Rajitha, a member of the Chennam-Pallippuram Panchayat. Despite strong currents and the handicap of bound arms, Kashinath maintained a steady pace and reached Vaikom Beach in Kottayam by 9:46 AM.

Kashinath, a Class 7 student at St. Xavier’s Public School, Pothanikkad, did not undertake this challenge on a whim. Under the guidance of coach Biju Thankappan of the Kothamangalam Aquatic Club, he spent months training in the demanding currents of the Muvattupuzha River to build the strength, stamina and technique needed to swim long distances without the use of his arms.

Upon his arrival at the shore, Kashinath was greeted as a hero by local residents and officials. A felicitation meeting was held at Vaikom Beach to celebrate his achievement, with speeches praising his determination and spirit. Municipal Chairman Abdul Salam Ravuthar inaugurated the ceremony, while D. Ranjith Kumar, the Opposition Leader of the municipality, presided over the event. Other local dignitaries—including Vaikom Fire and Rescue Officer P. Shine and program coordinator A.P. Ansil—also lauded the young swimmer’s accomplishment.

Kashinath, the son of Rajeev and Prasija of Pallarimangalam, now joins a small but elite group of young adventurers who have pushed the limits of human capability in the challenging waters of Vembanad Lake.
