A Swindon resident has captured national attention after raising thousands of pounds for charity during a bold attempt to break the world record for pulling a van over a long-distance course.
Thirty-four-year-old fitness enthusiast Mark Hollister took on the extraordinary challenge at the Swindon Rugby Club grounds on Sunday morning. His goal: to pull a fully-loaded 2.4-tonne van for a continuous distance of one kilometre, aiming to surpass the current world record.
Despite strong winds and intermittent rain, hundreds of supporters gathered at the venue, cheering as Hollister battled through the grueling feat. The event was organised to support Wiltshire Children’s Hospital Fund, a cause close to his heart after his niece received life-saving treatment earlier this year.
Though the official verification from record authorities is still pending, Hollister successfully completed the distance in just 17 minutes, a time believed to be faster than the existing record.
“I felt my legs burning halfway through, but seeing the crowd and remembering why I was doing this kept me going,” Hollister said after the attempt, still catching his breath.
Event organisers confirmed that over £12,000 was raised through donations, sponsorships, and live-stream contributions — far exceeding their initial target.
Local councillor Emma Ridley praised the effort, saying, “Mark has not only shown incredible strength but also incredible heart. Swindon is proud of him.”
Record officials are expected to release the confirmation within the next two weeks. Regardless of the outcome, the town is already celebrating Hollister as a local hero.
