In a groundbreaking move toward sustainable sports infrastructure, SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, home of Borussia Dortmund, has officially become the site of the world’s largest stadium roof solar installation. The record-setting project is the result of a landmark partnership between energy giant RWE and the Bundesliga powerhouse Borussia Dortmund (BVB).
The massive solar array—spanning the iconic stadium’s roof—features thousands of high-efficiency photovoltaic panels capable of generating an unprecedented amount of clean, renewable energy. This installation not only powers significant portions of the stadium’s operations but also contributes surplus electricity back to the local grid.
According to project engineers, the solar system will generate enough energy annually to power hundreds of households, dramatically reducing the stadium’s carbon footprint and setting a global standard for green sporting venues.
“Our collaboration with Borussia Dortmund showcases what can be achieved when sports and sustainability move forward together,” said an RWE spokesperson. “SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is now more than a football stadium—it is a beacon for climate innovation.”
The initiative aligns with Borussia Dortmund’s long-term environmental goals, including reducing energy consumption, cutting emissions, and promoting responsible resource use. Fans and sustainability advocates are praising the club for using its influence to drive meaningful ecological progress.
Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke called the achievement a “proud moment for the club,” adding, “Football has the power to inspire. By turning the world’s most famous stadium into a renewable energy landmark, we’re showing that the future of sports can—and must—be sustainable.”
With this installation, Dortmund now stands at the forefront of global eco-friendly sports innovation, proving that world-class football and world-class sustainability can go hand in hand.
