In a landmark achievement blending endurance, innovation, and global leadership, Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has set two Guinness World Records at the extraordinary World’s Deepest Marathon, marking a historic milestone for India and the global mining industry.
The event, held on October 23, 2025, took participants 1,120 metres (3,675 feet) below sea level inside Boliden’s Garpenberg Zinc Mine—one of the world’s most technologically advanced mining sites. Runners completed the full 42.2 km marathon distance in this extreme underground environment, carving their names into record books.
Two World Records Achieved:
Deepest Marathon (Individual)
Deepest Underground Marathon Distance Run (Team)
In a proud moment for India, HZL CEO Mr. Arun Misra became the first Indian to be recognized with Guinness World Records in these categories. He participated alongside HZL COO Mr. Kishore Kumar S. and 55 other runners from 18 countries, showcasing resilience, determination, and global collaboration.
Participants braved extreme underground conditions: Temperatures touching 30°C High humidity levels, making breathing and stamina management challenging Near-complete darkness, with only headlamps to guide runners Rugged gravel flooring and narrow tunnels, repeating 11 laps of a 3.84 km circuit
Despite the adversity, the runners pushed through, reflecting not only human endurance but also modern mining’s advancements in safety and technology.
“Participating in the World’s Deepest Marathon was not just an endurance challenge—it was a powerful symbol of how the mining industry has evolved,” said Mr. Arun Misra. “With safety, technology, and collaboration, we can achieve extraordinary feats even in the world’s most challenging environments.”
The marathon was organized by BecomingX, Boliden, and ICMM (International Council on Mining & Metals), with a strong humanitarian spirit. The event raised over $1 million for charity, highlighting how sports, innovation, and purpose-driven efforts can come together for positive global impact.
ICMM CEO Rohitesh Dhawan emphasized the transformation of mining, noting that air quality in the mine featured 30% more oxygen than atmospheric levels, showcasing the sector’s leap in health, safety, and technology.
As the only Indian Official Partner, HZL demonstrated its vision of responsible, future-ready mining. The company also champions wellness and community fitness through initiatives like the Vedanta Zinc City Half Marathon in Udaipur, promoting health and active living.
These Guinness World Records cement HZL’s status not just as a global mining leader—but as a pioneer in endurance, innovation, sustainability, and inspiration.
