Benfica Earns Guinness World Record for Most Wins in Portuguese Top-Division Football

Portuguese football giant S.L. Benfica has officially etched its name in the Guinness World Records for achieving the most wins in the top division of Portuguese football, with an astounding 38 national championship titles. This historic milestone reinforces Benfica’s legendary status as one of Europe’s most successful and decorated football clubs.

The recognition, confirmed by Guinness World Records, celebrates the club’s enduring excellence and consistency across nearly nine decades of competition. Since its first championship victory in 1936, Benfica has built a legacy defined by passion, talent, and unmatched dedication to the game.

“This record is a reflection of Benfica’s heritage, our incredible supporters, and generations of players who have carried the club’s spirit forward,” said Rui Costa, President of S.L. Benfica. “It’s more than just a football achievement — it’s a national symbol of pride.”

Benfica’s 38th league title was secured on May 27, 2023, marking a significant moment in the club’s illustrious history. The victory solidified their dominance in the Primeira Liga, Portugal’s top-tier competition, ahead of traditional rivals FC Porto and Sporting CP.

Founded in 1904, S.L. Benfica — affectionately known as “The Eagles” — has long been a pillar of Portuguese sports culture. With millions of supporters worldwide and a fan base spanning continents, Benfica remains one of the most supported football clubs on the planet.

In addition to their domestic success, the club has also made a lasting impact on international football, with legendary players such as Eusébio, Rui Costa, and João Félix donning the red jersey over the decades.

This Guinness World Record adds another feather to Benfica’s cap as the club continues to pursue excellence both on and off the pitch. In October 2025, Benfica also applied for another Guinness World Record — for the highest voter turnout in a sports club election, after more than 86,000 members participated in their leadership elections, setting another benchmark in fan engagement.

From their record-setting victories to their community-driven initiatives, Benfica remains a shining example of how passion and perseverance can create a lasting sporting legacy.
