The world of animal record-keeping is mourning the loss of a beloved senior resident. Hawthornden Wainui, the charismatic alpaca who held the Guinness World Records title for the Oldest Alpaca in Captivity, passed away on September 26 at the extraordinary age of 27 years and 267 days.
Wainui lived on a farm in New Zealand with his devoted owners, Vicki and Alex Cordier, who celebrated his remarkable longevity. Alpacas typically live between 15 and 20 years, making Wainui’s long life a testament to his pampered and relaxed lifestyle.
Vicki and Alex Cordier shared a heartfelt tribute following his death: “Our dearest Wainui. Forever you will have a special place in our hearts. A friend of many in New Zealand and around the world. Rest in peace our amazing alpaca!”
Wainui, who was born on January 2, 1998, was a celebrated figure on the Cordier’s farm, where his calm demeanor and easy-going routine were credited for his long life. In his final years, he was known to enjoy a cosy winter coat, leisurely grazing, and the companionship of his friends, a goat named Barney and a sheep named Squeak.
Wainui officially claimed his world record title just months before his passing, cementing his legacy as a unique and extraordinary animal pioneer. He will be dearly missed by his family and his international fan club.
