Smriti Mandhana Surpasses Virat Kohli, Becomes India’s Fastest Batter to 5,000 ODI Runs

India’s star opener, Smriti Mandhana, has etched her name into cricketing folklore by becoming the fastest Indian batter—across both men’s and women’s cricket—to reach the landmark of 5,000 One-Day International runs.

The dynamic left-hander achieved the incredible feat in her 112th ODI innings during India’s crucial ICC Women’s World Cup clash against Australia at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Mandhana’s milestone moment surpassed the previous Indian record of 114 innings, which was jointly held by batting maestro Virat Kohli (Men’s ODI) and the legendary Viv Richards (West Indies Men’s ODI).

The 29-year-old was in dazzling form, scoring a fluent 80 runs off just 66 balls before being dismissed, an innings that anchored India’s strong start. She reached the 5,000-run mark with her trademark elegant stroke-play, securing the record and a standing ovation from the crowd.

Mandhana’s rapid ascent also makes her the fastest woman cricketer globally to reach the 5,000-run milestone, obliterating the previous women’s record held by Stafanie Taylor of the West Indies, who took 129 innings.

In the all-time international list (across both genders), Mandhana is now the third-fastest batter, trailing only Pakistan’s Babar Azam (97 innings) and South Africa’s Hashim Amla (101 innings).

The record is the latest in a series of milestones for Mandhana, who also became the first-ever woman cricketer to score 1,000 ODI runs in a single calendar year during the same innings, breaking a 28-year-old record held by Australia’s Belinda Clark (970 runs in 1997).

Her consistency and acceleration mark a monumental moment for Indian cricket, affirming her status as one of the modern legends of the game.
