Rajasthan Emerges as India’s Most Popular Travel Destination, Surpassing Goa and Kerala

The desert state of Rajasthan has officially claimed the title of India’s most popular holiday destination, surpassing long-time favourites Goa and Kerala. A recent industry report highlights a significant shift in domestic travel preferences, crowning the Jaipur–Udaipur–Jaisalmer circuit as the nation’s top pick.

According to the “Festive Travel Pulse 2025” report by leading travel experts, the royal circuit of Rajasthan accounted for 16% of total domestic holiday bookings, securing its pole position. This marks a clear lead over the traditionally dominant coastal and backwater destinations.

  • Rajasthan Circuit (Jaipur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer): 16%
  • Goa: 10%
  • Kerala: 9%
  • Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand: 12%

The data indicates that the state is not only attracting its traditional foreign clientele but is now the “favourite choice” for Indian travelers, especially for high-value family and group holidays.

Industry analysts attribute Rajasthan’s ascendancy to a growing trend for “smart luxury” escapes, where travelers seek richer, curated experiences and better stays without significantly overspending. Rajasthan’s unique blend of heritage, culture, and upscale-yet-affordable hospitality has perfectly captured this demand.

  1. Regal Heritage: The majestic forts, sprawling palaces, and rich history of cities like Jaipur (Pink City), Jodhpur (Blue City), and Udaipur (City of Lakes) offer a distinct cultural experience unmatched by other states.
  2. Unique Experiences: Activities like desert safaris in the Thar, luxurious stays in converted heritage havelis, and vibrant folk festivals provide high-impact, memorable escapes.
  3. Improved Infrastructure: Better connectivity through the “Golden Triangle” circuit (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur) and robust internal infrastructure have made the state more accessible for family and group tours.

An official from the state’s Tourism Department commented, “The efforts to position Rajasthan as a year-round destination, focusing on wellness, wildlife, and heritage hotels, are clearly paying off. Travelers want authentic stories and regal hospitality, and that is what we deliver best.”

The shift signals a new era for Indian tourism, where cultural depth and historical grandeur are taking precedence over typical beach holidays for the domestic market.
