Pune to Host Asia’s Largest Hospital, Named in Honor of the Nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar

In a monumental tribute to the legendary singer Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, the Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation (LMMF) has announced plans to establish one of Asia’s largest hospitals in Pune. The ambitious project, to be called the Lata Mangeshkar Institute of Medical Sciences (LMIMS), was officially announced by her brother, veteran music composer Hridaynath Mangeshkar, on the occasion of her 96th birth anniversary.

The new super-speciality hospital is planned to be built on a sprawling 40-acre campus in Nandoshi, off Sinhagad Road in Pune. The first phase of the development will feature a 1,000-bed super-speciality surgical hospital, positioning the institution as a world-class center for medical excellence and a significant boost to Maharashtra’s healthcare infrastructure.

“Lata didi carried forward our father’s legacy by nurturing the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. Now, in her memory, we are taking the next step to create one of the finest medical institutes in Asia,” said Hridaynath Mangeshkar during the ‘Mee Lata Dinanath’ program.

Dr. Dhananjay Kelkar, Trustee of the LMMF, confirmed that the foundation has already submitted the necessary plans to authorities. “The aim is to make it one of Asia’s largest hospitals,” Dr. Kelkar stated. The LMMF, which currently runs the respected Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Mai Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, expects to commence work on the LMIMS project in December this year with a target for early completion.

The scope of the project extends beyond the surgical facility. Subsequent phases are planned to include separate hospitals for rehabilitation, psychiatric care, and a museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating Lata Mangeshkar’s enduring legacy.

The announcement of the new hospital, a non-profit venture, was welcomed by dignitaries, including Cultural Minister Ashish Shelar, who praised the Mangeshkar family’s continued dedication to public welfare and their lasting contribution to Maharashtra’s cultural and social heritage. The facility is expected to serve patients from across India and solidify Pune’s reputation as a key destination for advanced medical tourism in Asia.
