Norway’s Atlantic Ocean Road: One of the World’s Dreamiest Drives

The spectacular Atlantic Ocean Road (Atlanterhavsveien) in Western Norway is once again attracting global attention, solidifying its reputation as one of the planet’s most mesmerizing and unforgettable driving experiences.

The 8.3-kilometer stretch of County Road 64, which connects the island of Averøy to the mainland, has become an international icon for its unique design and breathtaking coastal scenery. The road features a series of eight dramatic, low-lying bridges that leap across islets and skerries, making drivers feel as though they are skimming across the surface of the open sea.

Often dubbed “the road in the ocean,” the Atlantic Road is celebrated as much for its architectural genius as for its natural beauty. The most famous structure, the cantilevered Storseisundet Bridge, is particularly renowned for creating an optical illusion, appearing from certain angles to drop off into the abyss.

“Driving the Atlantic Road is more than just a journey; it’s an intimate encounter with the raw power and beauty of the Norwegian coast,” says a spokesperson for the local tourist board. “On calm days, you are surrounded by tranquil blue waters, perfect for spotting seals and sea birds. When a storm rolls in, the waves crash spectacularly over the road, offering an adrenaline-pumping, dramatic view of nature’s forces.”

The route has been globally recognized numerous times, including being named the “Norwegian Construction of the Century” and featuring prominently in travel guides and automotive commercials worldwide, most recently gaining wider fame for its appearance in the James Bond film No Time to Die.

Designated as one of Norway’s 18 National Tourist Routes, the drive is dotted with popular rest areas and viewpoints, such as the Eldhusøya service center with its “floating” walkway, allowing visitors to stretch their legs and absorb the panoramic views of the Hustadvika open sea.

Whether seeking an architectural marvel, a photographer’s paradise, or simply the road trip of a lifetime, the Atlantic Ocean Road remains a must-see destination on every traveler’s bucket list.
