10-Year-Old With ADHD and Autism Wins Gold for India at World Kickboxing Championship

A truly remarkable and inspiring achievement unfolded on the world stage as Ethan Sebastian, a 10-year-old boy from India, defied expectations to win a Gold Medal at the World Kickboxing Championship held in Alicante, Spain, from November 18 to 22.

Ethan, who was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) at age three and later with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), created a world record by becoming the first autistic child to represent India and win gold in the Musical Form event at the championship.

The journey to the world title was a testament to Ethan’s dedication and his family’s unwavering support. For Ethan’s mother, Manasi, the achievement is surreal, especially recalling the initial struggles to find a school that would accommodate his needs.

Kickboxing was initially introduced to help the energetic young boy channel his excess energy. Under the guidance of his coach, Ethan took to the martial art immediately. The sport proved to be more than just an outlet; it helped him:

  • Channel his energy: The physical demands and routine provided a constructive way to manage his hyperactivity.
  • Improve focus: The structured discipline of martial arts helped him concentrate.
  • Establish a routine: Kickboxing provided a disciplined structure that greatly benefited his overall well-being.

Ethan, who competed in the sub-junior category alongside neurotypical children, secured his place in the world championship after winning the Gold Medal in Musical Form at the National Kickboxing Championship in Dehradun in 2024.

Ethan’s gold medal is a significant milestone, not just for him but for the entire special needs community in India and worldwide. He performed the non-contact Musical Form of kickboxing, which showcases pre-arranged movements and forms set to music, demonstrating incredible control, memory, and physical skill.

His achievement has been celebrated widely, proving that diagnoses of ADHD and Autism are not barriers but rather different pathways to excellence. “I am a world champion now. I brought gold medal for India,” Ethan proudly told his mother after the victory, a moment that encapsulates the triumph of spirit over challenge.
