“Young Tigresses Make History, Storm to SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship Glory”

The “Young Tigresses,” India’s unstoppable U-17 women’s football team, have been crowned champions of the SAFF U-17 Women’s Championship 2025, concluding a campaign that was arguably the most dominant in the tournament’s history. Despite a dramatic 3-4 defeat to Bangladesh in their final match, the Indian team had already secured the title, holding an unassailable lead in the points table.

India’s triumph was built on a foundation of relentless attacking prowess and a rock-solid defense. Over the course of the tournament, the Young Tigresses won five of their six matches, scoring an incredible 30 goals and conceding just four—all in the final game. Their commanding victories included a 7-0 rout of Nepal and a stunning 8-0 demolition of Bhutan. The team’s earlier 2-0 victory against Bangladesh in their first encounter had already set the stage for their championship run.

The final match against Bangladesh was a rollercoaster of emotions. After conceding their first goal of the tournament within the opening minute, the team showed incredible resilience to fight back and level the score at 3-3 with a late goal from captain Julan. However, a last-minute strike from Bangladesh’s Sauravi Prity secured the win for the home side, a loss that brought tears to the eyes of the Indian players despite their overall victory.

Individual performances were a hallmark of India’s success. 14-year-old Anushka Kumari was named the tournament’s Top Goalscorer, netting a remarkable eight goals. Her agility and finishing ability were a constant threat to opposing defenses. Additionally, Abhista Basnett earned the Most Valuable Player award for her outstanding all-around contribution, which included four goals and three assists.

The team’s head coach, Joakim Alexandersson, was full of praise for his squad. “The team has shown immense character and a never-say-die attitude. This tournament was not just about winning but also about gaining experience for bigger challenges ahead,” he said, referencing the upcoming AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers.

This championship victory is a testament to the growing strength of women’s football at the grassroots level in India. The Young Tigresses are not just champions; they are a symbol of the bright future of Indian football on the international stage.
