A man who discovered a passion for drones while undergoing cancer treatment has lit up the night sky and a new chapter in his life, officially setting a Guinness World Records title in the process. Christopher Bradbury from the UK has been recognized for forming the most emojis by multirotor/drones in three minutes, creating a total of 30 and beating the previous record by six.
Bradbury’s stunning drone show, which took place over Shropshire in June 2024, was a testament to both his technical skill and his personal journey. The feat required the simultaneous programming and flight of 109 drones, a complex logistical challenge that he orchestrated himself. He formed a mix of familiar emojis, including winking faces and objects like the eggplant, rocket, and poop symbol.
The record is far more than a personal triumph for Bradbury. His passion for drones began in 2007 as a form of “bucket list” therapy while he was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. He found that flying model aircraft was not only a great way to get out of the house but also a much-needed boost for his physical and mental well-being. This hobby soon turned into a fascination with drone technology and, eventually, a full-time career in aerial filming for TV and film.
“The drone world has basically become my entire life,” he told Guinness World Records. “I would love it if in 10 years’ time, my record is smashed and it’s done by someone who says ‘I did it because I saw Chris Bradbury’s video.'”
Bradbury’s achievement serves as a powerful reminder that out of adversity can come innovation and that technology can be a force for healing and inspiration.
