A Nigerian crocheter has more than doubled a world record, showcasing her incredible endurance and dedication to her craft. Chidinma Modupe Okafor, 30, from Lagos, successfully completed a continuous crocheting marathon of 72 hours, setting a new Guinness World Record for the “longest crocheting marathon.”
During her three-day “crochet-a-thon,” which took place from December 24 to 27, 2023, Okafor created a stunning white dinner gown. Her final time of 72 hours shatters the previous record of 34 hours and 7 minutes, which was set by Alessandra Hayden (USA) in 2021.
Okafor’s journey to the record books was a test of both physical and mental stamina. As per Guinness World Records rules for “longest marathon” attempts, she was allowed a five-minute break for every hour of crocheting, which she used for eating, sleeping, or using the restroom.
Inspired by her lifelong passion for the craft, which she learned as a child, Okafor embarked on the challenge to highlight the artistry and perseverance involved in crocheting. Her dedication and success are part of a broader trend of Nigerians breaking world records, following the inspirational lead of Hilda Baci, who set the record for the longest cooking marathon.
Okafor’s monumental achievement not only places her in the record books but also shines a global spotlight on the intricate and beautiful art of crocheting.
