At 94 years old, Jim Oppegard of Minnesota has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest bus driver. A great-grandfather of three, Oppegard’s career behind the wheel spans more than half his life, a testament to his passion for the job and his desire to stay active.
Oppegard, who was 93 when his record was confirmed in April, began his driving career as a city bus driver. He retired at age 65, but found himself bored with life away from the road. He soon returned to work, and for the past 14 years, he has been employed by Northstar Bus Lines, where he drives a school bus for children with special educational needs.
His employer has lauded him as the “definition of an exemplary employee,” noting that he is “never late, doesn’t call in sick, and is an extremely good and safe driver.” Due to his age, Oppegard is required to pass an annual physical examination and driving evaluation, which he consistently aces with “flying colors.”
For Oppegard, the job is more than just a way to stay busy. He says it allows him to continue sending money to a Christian ministry his daughter established in Africa, an act of charity that brings him great satisfaction.
“The children can be a challenge but driving them is also a special reward,” he told Guinness World Records. His dedication and longevity have made him a local celebrity, and he says he is proud to be an inspiration to others. His remarkable achievement is a powerful reminder that passion and purpose can keep a person going for a lifetime.
