Green-fingered horticulturist Kevin English has officially broken his own Guinness World Record, growing an orchid with a staggering 159 flowers. The record-breaking bloom, a monopodial orchid, was unveiled by English at his home in Waterloo, Ontario, in March.
This incredible feat surpasses English’s previous record, set in 2023, by a significant margin. “This year I wanted to break my previous record for most flowers on a monopodial orchid to push the boundaries of the achievement and set a new benchmark,” he said.
English’s passion for orchids began over 30 years ago when his mother gifted him a cymbidium orchid. Over the years, his collection has grown to over 300 unique varieties, and he has become a master of orchid cultivation. His success comes from a meticulous approach to care, which includes keeping his home at a consistent temperature and humidity, using custom-designed fertilizers, and maintaining a strict watering schedule.
The record-breaking plant, an Angraecum sesquipedale orchid, is known for its large, waxy, star-shaped flowers and a long, nectar-filled spur that can measure up to 40 cm. The plant’s incredible number of blooms is a testament to English’s deep understanding of the plant’s needs.
The accomplishment has been hailed by the orchid-growing community, and English’s dedication is seen as an inspiration for hobbyists and professionals alike. His record-breaking achievement is not just a personal triumph but a testament to the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
