India has taken a major leap towards sustainable urban mobility with the inauguration of its first-ever solar-roof cycling track in Hyderabad. Spanning 23 kilometers along the Outer Ring Road (ORR), this “Healthway” track is a pioneering initiative that not only promotes fitness but also generates clean, renewable energy.
Inspired by a similar model in South Korea, the project was officially inaugurated by Telangana’s then-Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, K. T. Rama Rao, on October 1, 2023. The track, which is open 24/7, features two distinct stretches: an 8.5 km section from Nanakramguda to the Telangana State Police Academy (TSPA) and a 14.5 km section from Narsingi to Kollur.
A Green Corridor with Powerful Features
The standout feature of this cycling track is the installation of approximately 16,000 solar panels on its roof. These panels serve a dual purpose: they provide protection to cyclists from sun and rain, and they generate a significant amount of electricity. The project is designed to produce 16 megawatts (MW) of power, which is equivalent to illuminating 32,000 streetlights or a vast 800 km of city roads.
The project, built at an estimated cost of around ₹95 crore, is a testament to the city’s commitment to eco-friendly development. The energy generated from the solar panels is expected to cover the track’s operational costs and provide a substantial saving for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).
More Than Just a Track
The “Healthway” is a comprehensive infrastructure designed for the convenience and safety of cyclists. It is a three-lane pathway, 4.5 meters wide, with five access points equipped with various amenities, including:
- Bicycle repair and rental stations
- Food stalls and restrooms
- First-aid facilities and CCTV surveillance
- Car and bicycle parking
This initiative is a significant step in encouraging a cycling culture in the city, reducing carbon emissions, and setting a new benchmark for urban planning in India. The success of this project is expected to pave the way for similar sustainable infrastructure in other cities across the country.
