Bhutan’s Richest Man Builds ₹8,000-Crore Empire from Humble Start

Often dubbed the “Ambani of Bhutan,” Dasho Topgyal Dorji, the chairman of the Tashi Group, has built a sprawling business empire that reflects the economic evolution of the Himalayan kingdom. His journey from a humble start with a capital of just Nu. 2,500 (approximately ₹2,500) to running a conglomerate of over 40 companies with a net worth of ₹8,000 crore is a testament to his vision and entrepreneurial spirit.

The Tashi Group, founded in 1959 by Dorji’s father, the late Dasho Ugen Dorji, has grown to become the largest private business house in Bhutan. It was founded in 1959 in Phuentsholing, Bhutan. Starting with the import of Indian spices and textiles, the group has diversified into almost every sector of Bhutan’s economy, including:

  • Aviation: Tashi Air (Bhutan Airlines)
  • Telecommunications: Tashi Infocomm
  • Banking: T-Bank
  • Hospitality: Taj Tashi
  • Manufacturing: A ferrosilicon plant and a soft drinks bottling factory

Dasho Topgyal Dorji’s hands-on approach and strategic leadership have been instrumental in this expansion. Under his guidance, the Tashi Group has not only thrived but has also become a major employer, providing jobs for over 3,000 people.

While the exact net worth of the Tashi Group is difficult to calculate as many of its companies are unlisted, its value was reportedly at Nu. 30 billion in 2006. This growth is a reflection of Bhutan’s economic progress and the opportunities that have emerged with the country’s gradual opening to the global market. Dorji’s success is not just a personal story of wealth but a significant chapter in the business history of Bhutan.
