Veteran Driver Chris Raschke Killed in 283mph Crash at Bonneville Salt Flats

Tragedy struck the world of land speed racing as veteran driver Chris Raschke was killed in a high-speed crash during an attempt to break the land speed record at Utah’s legendary Bonneville Salt Flats.

Race organisers from the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), which has run the iconic Speed Week event since the 1940s, confirmed that Raschke lost control of his rocket-shaped vehicle roughly two miles into his run. The crash occurred at an estimated speed of 283mph (455km/h).

Raschke, a respected figure in the racing community, was the talk of last year’s Speed Week after recording the fastest speed of the event at 459mph, according to Hot Rod magazine. Known for his precision driving and passion for pushing the limits, he was widely admired by fellow racers.

Medical teams responded immediately, but despite treatment at the scene, Raschke succumbed to his injuries. Officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Tributes have been pouring in from across the motorsport world, with fellow drivers and fans remembering him as a fearless competitor and generous mentor. “Chris wasn’t just chasing records — he was chasing dreams, and inspiring the rest of us to do the same,” one racer said.

Speed Week will continue with a moment of silence planned in Raschke’s honor, ensuring his legacy roars on across the Salt Flats he loved.
