A Utah retiree, known as “Racer Tom,” has once again defied gravity and expectations, breaking his own world record for the greatest vertical distance skied downhill in a season. At 70 years old, Thomas Hart has officially surpassed his previous record, solidifying his status as one of the most passionate skiers on the slopes.
Hart first set the record last year, skiing a staggering 8,513,340 feet (2,594,866 m) between November 2023 and April 2024. But his love for the slopes, particularly at Park City Mountain Resort, where he is a regular, knew no bounds. With a new season approaching, he was determined to beat his own distance.
His hard work paid off. In the 2024-2025 season, Hart logged an astonishing 9,010,000 feet (2,746,248 m), shattering his previous record. He achieved this incredible vertical distance over just a few months, skiing nearly every day from the season’s opening to its close. His achievement has earned him the nickname “The Legend” among the Park City community.
When asked about his motivation, Hart, who started skiing in the 1960s, said it was a combination of his love for the sport and his desire to stay active. “Skiing is my exercise,” he said. “It’s my passion. The record is great, but the real reward is being out here on the mountain every day.”
Thomas Hart’s story is an inspiring reminder that age is no barrier to achieving monumental goals. He continues to prove that with dedication and a genuine love for an activity, you can not only accomplish your dreams but also reach new heights you never thought possible.
