The night sky above Chongqing, China, was transformed into a canvas of light and technology as a spectacular drone show broke a world record. A staggering 11,787 drones lit up the sky, creating the largest aerial image formed by multirotor/drones and earning a spot in the record books for Chongqing Broadcasting Media Group Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen DAMODA Intelligent Control Technology Co., Ltd.
The record-breaking event took place on June 17, 2025, as a tribute to the city’s 28th anniversary as a municipality directly under the central government. The awe-inspiring display, which took place in the Nan’an district, was a fusion of technology and art, captivating an audience of thousands who gathered along the banks of the Yangtze River.
The performance, divided into seven chapters, highlighted the city’s unique charm and vibrant culture. The drones choreographed intricate formations to showcase iconic Chongqing elements, including its majestic mountain and river landscapes, the delicate camellia (Chongqing’s city flower), and motifs from the popular online game, Dungeon & Fighter.
The massive scale of the show required meticulous planning and flawless execution, with the teams having to overcome the challenges of Chongqing’s complex terrain and manage signals over long distances. Despite the technical difficulties, the drones moved in perfect synchronization, creating a seamless and breathtaking spectacle.
