A Marine Corps veteran who traded the extreme sports of his past for a recumbent trike has set a new Guinness World Records title, proving that a life-altering injury cannot stop the spirit of an adventurer. Michael Ricci, a former avid BASE jumper and skier, now holds the record for the fastest 200 miles by trike, an astonishing feat of endurance and resilience.
Ricci took to a course in the challenging landscape of Death Valley, where he completed the 200-mile ride in just 9 hours, 57 minutes, and 48 seconds. The achievement is a testament to his determination, especially given his journey since a paragliding accident in 2020 left him partially paralyzed.
The injury caused a spinal cord impairment, leaving him with chronic pain and balance issues that made two-wheeled cycling nearly impossible. But with the help of the Challenged Athletes Foundation, he discovered the world of ultra cycling on a modified trike. “Cycling has profoundly impacted my life,” he said. “You have no idea.”
The record-breaking ride was a culmination of extensive training and a testament to his adaptability. Navigating the winds and tough terrain of Death Valley, Ricci not only set the 200-mile record but also broke five other speed and distance records in a single day, including the fastest 100km and 100-mile rides.
Ricci’s story of triumph over adversity has inspired many. By channeling his adventurous spirit into a new passion, he has proven that the drive to push one’s limits can conquer any challenge.
