The coastal city of Mangalore has secured the top spot as India’s safest city in 2025, according to a newly released national safety index. Known for its clean streets, community policing, and strong civic engagement, Mangalore outperformed major metros on parameters such as crime rate, law enforcement efficiency, public safety infrastructure, and quality of life.
The index, compiled from official crime statistics, citizen surveys, and safety audits, placed Pune and Chandigarh in second and third positions, respectively.
In sharp contrast, New Delhi ranked among the most dangerous cities in the country, citing persistently high rates of violent crime, theft, and harassment cases despite increased police presence and technological surveillance measures.
Mangalore residents credited the achievement to effective policing, active neighbourhood watch groups, and a culture of community cooperation. “It’s not just about law enforcement—it’s about everyone taking responsibility for safety,” said a local civic activist.
The findings have reignited discussions about urban safety disparities in India, with experts urging high-crime cities to adopt community-based policing and better urban planning strategies to improve public security.
