Mahavatar Narsimha Creates History as First Indian Animated Film to Gross ₹300 Crore Worldwide

The Indian animated film industry has shattered a major box office barrier, as the mythological epic Mahavatar Narsimha has become the first Indian animated feature to cross the ₹300 crore mark in worldwide gross. The film’s monumental success is a historic milestone, solidifying its place as a blockbuster and signaling a new era for animation in the country.

The film, directed by Ashwin Kumar, was released on July 25, 2025, and initially had a modest opening. However, it gained immense momentum through strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews, particularly from family audiences. Backed by the renowned production house Hombale Films, the film has now surpassed even major live-action hits of the year.

While the film’s total worldwide gross is an estimated ₹300.84 crore, the previous highest-grossing Indian animated film was Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiiyaan, which earned a distant ₹30 crore. This makes Mahavatar Narsimha’s achievement a monumental leap for the industry, proving that animated films based on Indian mythology and culture can compete with global animated giants.

The film’s success is seen as a testament to the power of compelling storytelling and cultural resonance. Its narrative, centered on two divine incarnations of Lord Vishnu, has resonated deeply with Indian audiences.
