Ireland Offers $90,000 to Settle on Its Remote Islands in Bold New Scheme

In a groundbreaking move to breathe new life into its lesser-populated regions, the Irish government has announced a generous relocation scheme offering up to $90,000 (approx. €80,000) to individuals and families willing to move to one of the country’s picturesque and remote offshore islands.

Under the initiative titled “Our Living Islands”, the funding is aimed at encouraging people to settle on 30 designated islands that are detached from the mainland and often overlooked in modern development. The goal is to revitalize these communities, which have seen a sharp decline in population due to urban migration, limited infrastructure, and lack of employment opportunities.

Eligible applicants must commit to purchasing and renovating vacant or derelict properties on the islands. The grant is not a direct cash payout but covers refurbishment costs under the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, now extended to these islands.

According to Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys, the plan is part of a larger national strategy to combat rural decline and preserve Ireland’s rich island culture. “This is not just about saving buildings — it’s about saving communities, languages, traditions, and a way of life that is uniquely Irish,” she stated.

The scheme is open to both Irish and international citizens, sparking global interest from digital nomads, nature lovers, retirees, and remote workers seeking peace, connection to nature, and a slower pace of life.

With stunning views, a strong sense of community, and an escape from the hustle and bustle, Ireland’s remote islands may soon become the world’s newest relocation hotspot — and now, they come with a $90,000 incentive.
