In a massive boost to India’s digital infrastructure, global tech giant Google has announced an investment of $6 billion to build Asia’s largest data center in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This marks one of the biggest foreign direct investments in India’s technology sector to date.
The proposed mega data center is expected to revolutionize data processing and cloud computing in Asia. Spanning hundreds of acres, the state-of-the-art facility will integrate AI-powered cooling systems, renewable energy sources, and advanced cybersecurity frameworks, placing India at the forefront of digital innovation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who virtually launched the project, hailed it as a “landmark step in India’s journey towards becoming a global digital powerhouse.” He praised Andhra Pradesh’s business-friendly policies and emphasized the center’s role in generating over 20,000 direct and indirect jobs.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet Inc., stated, “With India’s booming internet economy and increasing cloud adoption, this investment in Vizag reflects our long-term commitment to India’s growth.”
Construction is expected to begin by the end of 2025, with phase one operations likely to start in 2027.
This historic investment is seen as a strategic move to meet the surging demand for cloud services across South Asia and to enhance data sovereignty by localizing storage and processing capabilities.
