An innovative solar-powered tricycle designed to enhance mobility for persons with disabilities has received global recognition at the BRICS Industrial Innovation Contest, solidifying India’s position as a leader in sustainable healthcare technology.
The groundbreaking mobility solution, developed by the Assistive Technology Centre (ATC) at the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ), was awarded the Outstanding Project Award at the contest held in February 2025. This prestigious accolade recognizes innovations that contribute to sustainable development and empower marginalized communities.
Officially launched by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in August 2024, the solar tricycle is designed as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional mobility aids. It is equipped with integrated solar panels and a motor, which significantly reduces the physical effort required for a person with a disability to travel.
According to Dr. Jitendra Sharma, the MD and founder CEO of AMTZ, the tricycle is a testament to the center’s commitment to redefining mobility and accessibility. “This global recognition… underscores ATC’s dedication to driving innovation in assistive technology,” he said. “The award-winning Solar Powered Tricycle is a testament to India’s leadership in sustainable healthcare technology and its vision for an inclusive future.”
The award-winning tricycle is part of a broader effort by AMTZ to provide high-quality, affordable solutions to improve the lives of people with disabilities, transforming transportation from a barrier into a tool for independence and empowerment.
