A Japanese illustrator has taken the internet by storm with a series of minimalist cat sketches that capture the essence of feline moods and movements in just a few lines. The artist, who goes by the pseudonym “NekoSumi,” combines traditional ink techniques with modern simplicity, producing expressive drawings that cat lovers around the world instantly relate to.
Each sketch, often no more than a few strokes, portrays a unique feline gesture — from the subtle arch of a curious back to the dramatic flop of a sleepy cat. The series has gone viral on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), with followers praising the artist’s ability to reflect the cat’s personalities with such economy of detail.
“These drawings feel like poetry with a pen,” said one fan. “Every cat owner recognizes these postures instantly.”
Art critics have also taken notice, calling the work “a masterclass in emotional minimalism.” Plans are underway for a global exhibition tour, beginning in Tokyo and moving to New York and Paris later this year.
The sketches have also sparked interest in animated adaptations and merchandise, including calendars, prints, and a possible illustrated book.
