72-Year-Old Vegan Nun Wins Medal at Her First Powerlifting Competition

In a truly inspirational display of strength, spirit, and discipline, 72-year-old vegan nun Sister Amrita Devi has stunned the sports world by winning a bronze medal at her first-ever powerlifting competition in California.

Clad in her traditional robes and radiating calm confidence, Sister Amrita competed in the Masters 70+ category, lifting an impressive 225 pounds in deadlift, securing her spot on the podium among seasoned athletes. Despite her age and unconventional background, she drew loud cheers and admiration from the crowd.

“I don’t lift for glory,” she said with a serene smile. “I lift to show what the human body can do with compassion, discipline, and faith.”

A devout Jain nun originally from India and now based in a spiritual retreat near San Francisco, Sister Amrita has followed a strict vegan diet for over 40 years and credits yoga, meditation, and plant-based nutrition for her strength and vitality.

Her participation — and success — has sent ripples through both the fitness and spiritual communities, challenging stereotypes about aging, diet, and what women can achieve later in life.

Event organizers honored her with a special citation for “Spirit of Strength”, calling her “a living example that age and lifestyle are no barrier to greatness.”
