In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Science and Environmental Conservation, the Government of India has conferred the Padma Shri on Shri Eklabya Sharma from West Bengal.
A renowned ecologist and environmental scientist, Shri Eklabya Sharma has spent over three decades at the forefront of biodiversity research, sustainable development, and ecological restoration in India and across South Asia. He is celebrated for his pioneering work in linking science with traditional knowledge to protect fragile ecosystems, particularly in the Himalayan and Eastern Himalayan regions.
Shri Sharma has held key leadership roles, including as Senior Advisor and former Director at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), where he championed transboundary cooperation for climate resilience and sustainable mountain development.
His research and policy advocacy have significantly influenced environmental strategies at national and international levels, with a focus on climate change adaptation, community-based conservation, and nature-based solutions.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sharma said, “This recognition is a tribute to the tireless work of communities and scientists committed to protecting nature. Science must serve both people and the planet.”
